Summit Academy is currently offering a summer college course to 10 young men. The history course, titled The World in the 20th Century, is offered on campus through our partnership with Butler County Community College through the College within the High School Program. Course instructor, Mr. Stewart, is also a GED instructor at Summit Academy. We hope this program continues to inspire Summit students to always "THINK COLLEGE".
We are proud to announce that on June 21st Summit Academy celebrated graduation for 23 exceptional young men. Friends, family, and faculty gathered to support the graduates on their big day. The commencement ceremony included vocal performances from students Brandon D. and Bailey E, as well as an inspiring message from our guest speaker, The Honorable Michelle G. Bononi. Following the graduation, students and their families were treated to a celebration and dinner hosted by The Summit Academy Food Services Department. Congratulations to the Class of 2018 and good luck in your future endeavors.
Building Community Through Giving Summit Academy students had the opportunity to volunteer at the Elliott Acres Therapeutic Riding Center. Elliott Acres aims to enhance the physical, mental, and emotional status of riders by teaching basic horsemanship principals which assist in improving the riders' movement, concentration, and communication. Summit Academy students assisted with maintenance projects at the Center and also learned about the important work being done through the therapy offered. We look forward to continuing this wonderful partnership.
On Tuesday, May 8, the Summit Academy Knights Volleyball team celebrated Senior Night at their game against Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic High School. Six of our students were recognized for their achievements this season prior to the match. Congratulations and good luck to our seniors!
The Summit Academy Students Learn the Impactful Legacy of Maya Angelou
Last month students attended “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” at the Hazlett Theater Center for Performing Arts. The regional premiere adaptation brings to life Maya Angelou’s landmark memoir that chronicles her journey of finding her voice, rising above the challenges of growing up black and female in the South during the 1930’s and learning to use her identity as a source of strength.
Prior to the performance, the young men of Summit Academy were privileged to attend a reception for Maya Angelou’s grandson, Mr. Elliot Jones, and great-granddaughter, Caylin Johnson. Mr. Jones is the Director of Community Engagement at the Maya Angelou Foundation. He was truly generous with his time and attention to the students as he spoke with each of them, inquiring about their backgrounds and their aspirations for the future. Ultimately, he shared with them the beauty of his grandmother’s story and the promise that good can result from any situation, including tragedy. He also reminded the boys that adversity can do more to develop character and should never be used to hold them back from achieving their potential.
Some of the comments from Summit Academy Students were "Thank you so much for letting me experience something new. I can say that it was the most interesting play that I have ever seen" – Elijah
I hope that I can see more plays while I am at Summit Academy. It helps make treatment more worthwhile and reminds me there are things worth getting treatment for " – Lex
