CGI I.T. Girl Challenge
Young ladies from New Outlook Academy are once again competing in the CGI I.T. Girl Challenge. This application creation competition is sponsored by CGI and Carnegie Mellon University.
This year the girls have decided to build an app that relates to mental health well-being called Love & Wellness.
Listening to the team strategize their plan and creative goals has been very exciting. Using concepts they have learned here at New Outlook, the girls intend to create a “chat room” where users can login to connect with peers and support providers in a virtual group therapy setting. The app will also include journaling options, health trackers, and different guided mediation tools.
We are looking forward to watching the development over the next four weeks.
Good luck to
Deyoniah S. and Ava S, (both York County)

The New Outlook Academy Book Club has selected its next book. “Thick: And Other Essays” by the American sociologist, professor, and writer Tressie McMillan Cottom is a
2019 collection of essays that explores a range of topics, including womanhood, body image, and social media. It also covers the author’s experience as a southern black woman in academia. Thick was a finalist for the 2019 National Book Award. Twenty-five young ladies have joined the book club for this reading, which will involve group chapter reviews and discussions. We are thrilled with the interest, excitement, and enthusiasm demonstrated by the students participating in this thought-provoking group activity.
New Outlook Academy students took advantage of the unusually warm weather with trips to West Mifflin Park and the Mt. Washington Overlook. They also enjoyed a visit to the ice cream shop!
Here is to hoping that Indian Summer days stick around for a while longer!!!
