WAKE UP WITH NEW OUTLOOK ACADEMY! Students at New Outlook Academy have recently created a morning announcement program that is viewed in all classrooms to start each school day. Students Montaea P. (Allegheny Co.) and Palace S. (Baltimore) are currently producing the segments that include updates on activities, staff and student interviews, motivational messages and other important information. All of our staff and students enjoy a positive message and usually a laugh to start each day. Have a great New Outlook Academy Day everyone!!!
EASTER FUN AT NEW OUTLOOK ACADEMY. Despite the impact of COVID-19 restrictions, the young ladies at New Outlook still found fun in participating in an egg hunt and the baskets they received over the holiday weekend. We all hope this is the LAST holiday that the virus impacts but the smiles and giggles sure did make things a lot better.

STRONGER THAN OUR CHALLENGES
Now more than ever, kids need to learn resiliency and self-reflection. Students in New Outlook Academy’s inpatient drug and alcohol program are focusing on those topics as they complete their final project and presentation. Everyone’s path to recovery looks a little different but they all include a plan for a bright, healthy and happy future.

CGI IT GIRL CHALLENGE UPDATE
While COVID-19 has caused some delays in the CGI App competition that “Team ABBS” is participating in, we are hopeful that the project will continue soon.
Our young ladies have revealed that our team is creating a quiz game challenge application. Most recently, the team met with Franco Colaizzi and Rob Angevine from CGI, as well as Komal Dhull from CMU to begin setting up a storyboard for their app.
We are looking forward to seeing these ladies rock the competition just as soon work gets back underway.

The stunning pictures below were shot and edited by students in the New Outlook Academy Photography/Multi-media Class. Their creativity is absolutely spectacular and truly represents the power of a single image. “When words become unclear, I shall focus with photographs. When images become inadequate, I shall be content with silence.” — Ansel Adams
New Outlook Academy is excited to participate in the CGI I.T. Girl Challenge – a mobile app development competition for girls from Pittsburgh Public Schools. Small teams of two to four high school juniors and seniors will partner with industry mentors to design and develop a smart-phone application. This challenge includes seven weekly mentoring sessions and utilizes Thunkable, a drag and drop mobile application platform, to compete in the challenge.
Teams will pitch their mobile app design to a panel of Pittsburgh business executives and community leaders on Saturday, March 28. The team with the most innovative, applicable and creative application will be awarded a one-time $20,000 college scholarship to be split evenly among the winning team members.
Under the guidance of New Outlook Academy Teacher Zach Gass, Serinity B. (Indiana Co.), Brooke H. (Maryland), Bree M. (Allegheny Co.) and Abby M. (Erie) make up the New Outlook Academy team!
New Outlook Academy recently held another awesome Student Achievement Assembly. This event recognizes student accomplishments across many diverse activities, including earning Honor Roll status and achieving outstanding participation in the STEAM Program, as well as the Photography and Bakery classes. Additional recognition went to students who earned their GED, OSHA certification or completed a college course. It was a great day to celebrate all the hard work and achievement of the young ladies of New Outlook Academy. Congratulations to all!!!
TUBMAN… A Modern Look at History Students at New Outlook Academy had the amazing opportunity to see the show TUBMAN at the August Wilson Cultural Center in Pittsburgh! This one woman show presents the story of Harriet Tubman reimagined as a young woman growing up in Harlem through a theatrical lens. Harriet Tubman is a heroine and American legend in her own right. This session takes the story of Harriet in the 19th century and places her in the 21st century; laced with the problems facing African-American youth all over the country, especially focusing on the mistreatment of black girls in schools. What would happen if a young woman like Harriet became a leader in this new world? Would her struggle be the same? Would she know her power? This play examines the centuries old fight with race, gender, and equality through a theatrical lens centered around the most influential female leaders in American history.
Students Palace S.( Maryland), Ceasie J. (Philadelphia), Lia H. (Philadelphia), Janida V. (Delaware), Kareema B.(Philadelphia) and Anna J. (York Co.) enjoyed learning about this piece of history!!!
Combining learning and fun during a trip to the Carnegie Science Center and Sportsworks, New Outlook Academy students were all smiles for the day. Exploring science in a new way!!!
