New Outlook Academy was proud to honor four bright young ladies yesterday at their graduation. Former Pittsburgh Steeler, Charlie Batch, and Vice President of the Pittsburgh Public School Board, Sylia Wilson, attended the graduation ceremony to speak encouraging words to our newly-graduated students. After the ceremony, students enjoyed a banquet dinner with family, friends, and staff to celebrate their accomplishments. New Outlook Academy Students had a an exciting opportunity to attend the premier of the movie Soul On Ice: Past, Present, and Future which tells the virtually unknown contributions of black athletes in ice hockey. The movie was shown at PPG Paints Arena and the girls were treated by the Pittsburgh Penguins staff to a variety of snacks that they could enjoy during the movie. After the movie ended, the students enjoyed listening to the director of Soul On Ice, Kwame Mason, answer questions regarding his experience making the movie. The students enjoyed themselves, especially when they were able to take a picture with Iceberg, the Penguins mascot!

Mr. C. Named Honorary Chair of the Sr. Thea Bowman Black Catholic Educational Foundation Scholarship Event.

Mr. Sam Costanzo of The Academy Schools lent his name, his presence and his personal resources to assist with a benefit whose mission and ministry has the focus of service to young African Americans in poverty.

On April 6, 2016 the event was held at Heinz Field in celebration of twenty-six years of The Sister Thea Bowman Black Catholic Educational Foundation. The Foundation began with the passion and spirit of an African American Franciscan Sister from Mississippi. Sister Thea Bowman was in the terminal stages of cancer when she was presented with a vision and a plan to raise up and sustain youngsters in need of opportunities for higher education.

Mr. Sam Costanzo, Founder of The Academy Schools, was chosen to be Honorary Chair of this event based on his initiative and vision in juvenile rehabilitation over his 40 year career. The hope is that this will be the beginning of a partnership between these two endeavors which promote support and mentoring for young people in our society who are too often forgotten.

The students of New Outlook Academy had a chance to volunteer with the “Play it Forward Pittsburgh” toy drive that was held at Century III Mall.

Founded in 2011, Play It Forward Pittsburgh is a children’s toy drive collecting gently used toys and offering them free to families who are in need or might be having a tough year. On Friday, December 11, our girls got the opportunity to be part of a volunteering team, stocking and organizing shelves to prepare for the event. They also helped families shop the next day. Tis the season to bring cheer!
