POLICIES BY DAY, PASTA BY NIGHT

September 16, 2025

Our Compliance Coordinator, Cindy, stepped out of the officeπŸ‘©β€πŸ’Ό and into the kitchen πŸ‘©β€πŸ³ for a few hours, volunteering to cook up a good time with our students.

Students rolled up their sleeves and got to work, learning how to make ricotta gnocchi with a lemonπŸ‹ sage brown butter sauce from scratch. Complimenting the entrΓ©e was a fresh salad πŸ₯— with toppings provided from the student gardens 🌱

Their hard work from farm to kitchen came full circle when students got to taste their homemade food. Fun and full bellies were had by all.

We’re grateful to U.S. Department of Agriculture and Penn State for providing partial funding of this experience through the PA Harvest of the Month grant as well as Whole Kids for their funding of our school’s gardens that are providing fresh produce for fresh experiences in the kitchen.🍽

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE TYPE OF PIE???

September 8, 2025

Here at New Outlook, our favorite type is the kind that is earned with 75 merits.

Last week two students earned enough points to pie Program Director, Nate, in the face. Nate is thinking the number of merits to earn a pie-ing should be raised. Let’s let the comment section decide.

THROUGH THEIR LENS: CAPTURING HEINZ MEMORIAL CHAPEL

September 4, 2025

Following their trip to Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum Trust, Inc., our photography students took a walk to explore Heinz Memorial Chapelβ›ͺ, one of Pittsburgh’s most stunning landmarks. With its soaring gothic arches and breathtaking stained-glass windows, the chapel offered the perfect setting to practice their skills in lighting, perspective, and composition. πŸ–Ό

Students took their time framing shots, experimenting with angles, and learning how architecture and light can tell a story just as powerfully as portraits or landscapes.πŸ’‘πŸŒˆ

Hands-on experiences like this bring classroom lessons to life, giving students the chance to see the world differently, through the lens of creativity and curiosity.πŸ€”πŸ’

HISTORY COMES TO LIFE AT SOLDIERS & SAILORS

September 2, 2025

When Lilly’s class visited Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum Trust, Inc., she didn’t just study history, she lived it. πŸ“–

Armed with a clipboardπŸ“‹βœ and curiosityπŸ€”πŸ’, Lilly explored exhibits on the Civil War and the U.S. Air Force, ending the day with a powerful memory: standing before a flag flown at Gettysburg, its bullet holes wearing the story of sacrifice and survival.

But the highlight? Director of Museum & Education, Tim Neff, surprising her and the entire group with personalized dog tags. Lilly now wears them proudly beside her brother’s Army tag, a symbol of her deepened connection to history and family. ❀️

β€œIt was like no other museum trip I’ve ever been on,” Lilly said.

Thank you to Tim Neff and the entire Soldiers & Sailors team for donating your time & this fieldtrip to bring history to life for our students!

PICTURE-PERFECT PIRATES MEMORY FOR HAYDEN

August 29, 2025

When Pirate Joe asked who wanted to play Pictionary, Hayden raised her hand and guessed the lucky number. Moments later, she was on the big screenπŸŽ₯ at her very first Pirates game,⚾ thanks to our amazing friends at Tickets for Kids Charities. 🎟

With the stadium watching, Hayden guessed the word β€œketchupβ€πŸ… in just six seconds, a brand-new record for Pirates’ Pictionary! πŸ†

“I didn’t find out that I broke the record until after we won the game,” said Hayden. “I was happy the entire day. I have the picture and the autograph and everything.”

Hayden left the game with #66’s hand-drawn picture, #39’s signed photograph, and memories to last a lifetime. πŸ–€πŸ’› Her memorabilia is hanging proudly back home in her dorm room.

Huge thanks to Joe Klimchak, Nick Gonzales, Kyle Nicolas, and everyone who made this day a true home run for Hayden!

A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE

August 27, 2025

“I was just so happy to be at the zoo,” said Piper. “I didn’t expect to have that much fun.”

The last time Piper was at the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium was a visit with her family when she was in third grade. Thanks to our partner, Tickets for Kids Charities, Piper truly enjoyed her recent, inspiring trip to the zoo.

Piper said previous science teachers haven’t intrigued her interest in the subject but New Outlook Science teacher, Bobby Scott, is the exception. At the zoo, what he has been teaching in class came to life as they observed and learned more about animal behavior and interactions.

“I saw a copperhead hiss,” said Piper. 🐍 The students also went inside the zoo’s goat enclosure, where they fed them. 🐐

Of all the animals they saw, the tiger was Piper’s favorite: “They’re just so fluffy and cute.”🐯

Staff and students at New Outlook are grateful to Tickets for Kids Charities and the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium for making this experience possible and resonate for our students.

There’s no greater thank you out there than to inspire future professionals in the career: Bobby said Piper “really loved it! She told me it inspired her to be a zoologist.”
