The Summit Academy Book Club has selected to read "The Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton for their first book of 2020. The students will read chapters together and then discuss the story of two groups of teenagers whose bitter rivalry stems from socioeconomic differences. Ultimately, the characters come to realize that the differences in social class do not necessarily mean they have to be enemies. We look forward to hearing feedback and opinions of the book from the group's participants.
Members of the Summit Academy wrestling team recently volunteered at the Powerade Wrestling Tournament at Canon-McMillan High school! These young men worked the tournament tables and videotaped for Flowrestling! In addition to contributing their time and talents at the event, the students got to watch some awesome wrestling over the course of the weekend.

The 2019 James E. Anderson Pennsylvania Conference on Juvenile Justice was held in Harrisburg on November 6th-8th. Summit Academy’s clinical supervisor, Jason Wilson and lead counselor, Kathryn Flannery were chosen to present their workshop, “Empowering Youth to Overcome Addiction” during the conference. Citing research and incorporating various styles of positive reinforcement, Jason and Kathryn presented an empowerment approach to helping youth overcome addiction within the context of the juvenile justice system. The workshop helped juvenile justice professionals understand the complexities of addiction and taught them specific skill sets and approaches, such as Motivational Interviewing and Wellness in Recover, to incorporate into their everyday jobs. The workshop was also sponsored by both Narcan and South Central EMS to raise further awareness of overdose education and prevention. Great job Jason and Kathryn!

Congratulations to these fine gentleman for sharing their wisdom and showing pride in their accomplishments! And thank you to the staff and students at Valley High School for hosting this event.
