“A garden is a grand teacher. It teaches patience and careful watchfulness; it teaches industry and thrift; above all, it teaches entire trust,” Gertrude Jekyll.
The beauty of a garden is that it accepts all who enter, regardless of skill set or prior experience. Most of the students involved in Garden Club are growing fresh produce for the first time. They start in the spring, planting tiny seedlings. They go out and weed, waiting patiently for their plants to grow. As the fruits and veggies ripen, they go out to harvest their bounty and reap the rewards of their hard work.
This week’s harvest was so plentiful that the Garden Club gave back to the community, distributing fresh garden veggies to surrounding neighbors. The experience truly builds many transferable skills in hard work, patience, and perseverance.
Funding for this year’s garden was provided through Whole Foods Market Foundation.

Summit alum R. Young is making the most of his opportunities since leaving our campus.
We can’t wait to see what this Senior year holds for this committed young man.
Rest assured, his fan club in Butler will be cheering on the Latrobe Wildcats!!!

The museum “Felt more personal. It was about someone’s actual life, history, and accomplishments,” Brianna.
Tickets for Kids Charities coordinated an inspirational visit to The Clemente Museum where students received a guided tour to learn about Clemente’s life, the game and homeland that he loved, and his philanthropic efforts.
Brianna described the museum as “Open and big. Lots of pictures of Clemente.”
Along with the pictures were jerseys, hats, shoes, gloves, trophies, baseballs, baseball bats, artwork, and more.
The intimate nature of the artifacts and the knowledgeable staff resonated with our students and exemplified the importance Clemente felt in contributing to the world around him. Students were humbled by the visit and the lengths Clemente went to for those in need.
“Any time you have an opportunity to make a difference in this world and you don’t, then you are wasting your time on Earth,” Roberto Clemente.
Thank you to all those who coordinated the special visit and thank you to Brianna for sharing your personal experience of the trip.

“The whole point of the museum is to get trolleys more active and used. After the creation of the automobile, their popularity diminished.” — Natalia
Students visited the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum
, where they took a trip through history. The museum graciously donated a guided tour, gave a ride on a refurbished trolley, and provided a STEAM workshop in Restoration 101. The whole experience brought history to life for the students.
Natalie went on to say, “We got to see how they put the trolleys together and refurbished them. I learned that a lot of discovered trolleys were repurposed into cabins. The museum is currently refurbishing a trolley into a cabin on site.”
The whole museum was an interactive experience. The refurbished cars allowed students to board and experience the atmosphere within the car.
“There was a subway car with original ads from the 50’s and 60’s.” Her favorite part was seeing the cars in their original condition, “Getting to go inside the trolleys, it felt like you were actually in the 60’s.”
Thanks to Kevin, Jocelyn, and the rest of the museum team for giving our students a ticket
to ride and opening your doors to such a unique experience for our students.
“The staff were very educated. They could answer any of our questions. The whole team had a passion for trolleys.”
Thanks to Natalia for providing her personal perspective on this fun and educational summer spotlight event!

Stitch walked in and “took pictures & gave high fives,” -A. “I wasn’t expecting it!”
A. was celebrating her 17th birthday when Beverly’s PGH arrived, ready to party. The most recent party featured a special guest appearance from Stitch as well as limbo, and sand art.
A. and the other birthday girls got a curated gift box just for them along with a personalized “shopping trip” at their boutique. While A. walked away with her arms filled gifts, the most important thing she walked away with was a memory filled with laughter, friendship, and good times.
Thank you Beverly’s PGHBeverly’s PGH for making each and every birthday celebrated at New Outlook memorable. You’re something our students look forward to at the end of every month.

“You wanna know what was really hard?” -L. “Spinning the pizza dough,” like they do in pizza shops.
Young Chefs Academy shared their kitchen, recipe, and patience with our students, showing them how to make pizza from scratch.![]()
Students rolled up their sleeves and got to work measuring flour, kneading dough, and chopping
fresh toppings.![]()

Each step guided them through important life skills:
Putting classroom lessons to use
Fostering collaboration & problem-solving
Building self confidence & self sufficiency
Grateful to U.S. Department of Agriculture , and Penn State for making this experience possible through PA Harvest of the Month funding. Thank you to Laree and her team at Young Chefs Academy as well, for sharing your time and kitchen with us! Fun was had by all.
Spinning pizza aside, L. had a great time making and an even better time eating her pizza, which was filled with pepperoni, peppers, and mushrooms. Unraveling a saved slice that she brought back to campus, you could see the pride she had in her creation and more importantly, in herself.

Whatβs really going on beneath our feet?
Summit students teamed up with Penn State to dig into soil testing in our garden!
Theyβre learning about checking pH levels, nutrients, and composition β all to understand how soil health affects plant growth. From science class to sustainable practices, they’re growing more than just veggies!
