A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE

August 27, 2025

“I was just so happy to be at the zoo,” said Piper. “I didn’t expect to have that much fun.”

The last time Piper was at the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium was a visit with her family when she was in third grade. Thanks to our partner, Tickets for Kids Charities, Piper truly enjoyed her recent, inspiring trip to the zoo.

Piper said previous science teachers haven’t intrigued her interest in the subject but New Outlook Science teacher, Bobby Scott, is the exception. At the zoo, what he has been teaching in class came to life as they observed and learned more about animal behavior and interactions.

“I saw a copperhead hiss,” said Piper. 🐍 The students also went inside the zoo’s goat enclosure, where they fed them. 🐐

Of all the animals they saw, the tiger was Piper’s favorite: “They’re just so fluffy and cute.”🐯

Staff and students at New Outlook are grateful to Tickets for Kids Charities and the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium for making this experience possible and resonate for our students.

There’s no greater thank you out there than to inspire future professionals in the career: Bobby said Piper “really loved it! She told me it inspired her to be a zoologist.”

IS IT A BIRD?! IS IT A PLANE?!

Nope! It’s New Outlook’s photography students learning how to operate the school’s photography drones.

5 students recently earned their Federal Aviation Administration Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST) certification. This is a certification that is required for anyone who flies a drone for recreational purposes.

Funding for New Outlook’s drones was provided through the school’s PACTT Innovation Grant.

Stay tuned for aerial photography pictures πŸ‘€ Students are planning to visit the bison at the game preserve soon!πŸƒ

YOU HERD IT HERE FIRST

August 18, 2025

“I was the first one to milk the goat,” said Hayden. “I was like, ‘you know what? Let’s do it!'” πŸ₯›

Goat Rodeo Farm & Dairy hosted our students for a fieldtrip filled with new interactive experiences, including cheese & caramel tastingπŸ§€, cheese making, goat milkingπŸ₯›, games, and apple picking🍎.

During the cheese making, Hayden added cinnamon & cinnamon sugar to her creation for a sweeter, more dessert-like cheese. The process also included making a creative name and logo for her cheese. In addition to taking home their created cheeses, the farm also gifted each student with temporary tattoos and goat pictures as keepsakes.

This trip to the farm was funded through a generous grant provided by U.S. Department of Agriculture and Penn State through the school’s PA Harvest of the Month Art Contest Grant. We’re grateful to our funders as well as Goat Rodeo Farm & Dairy for their wonderfully curated fieldtrip.

Hayden says it best, when she talks about what the experience meant to her: “I never got to be a kid growing up but this made me feel like a kid again. I had the best time of my life out there.”

RAD TIMES AT RANDYLAND

August 15, 2025

Like no other Pittsburgh destination, a visit to Randyland always keeps things interesting. Students took a detour to this community installation after their visit at the Clemente Museum. They finished out the beautiful day making memories and interacting in Randyland’s “Playhouse for yesterdays memories-gifts.”

Brianna described the visit as “Fun. My eyeballs were always looking at something colorful.” πŸ‘€

It was fun to goof around at Randyland with the displays: “Acting like a supermodel, getting pictures taken,” Brianna.

We’re grateful for those that have contributed to making Randyland such a fun and interesting destination to visit πŸ™‚
